The woman tragically killed during the violent shooting at Boom Island Park on Sunday evening has been identified as Stageina Katraya Shapryia Whiting, a 23-year-old resident of Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that Whiting died from a gunshot wound to the torso after being rushed to Hennepin County Medical Center.
The shooting occurred around 7:45 p.m. on June 1, in what witnesses described as a sudden and terrifying incident during what was supposed to be a peaceful community gathering in the popular downtown park. Families had gathered to enjoy the summer weather, with music, food, and children playing nearby, when multiple gunshots rang out near the north side of the park.
According to Minneapolis Police Department spokesperson Garrett Parten, officers arrived within minutes of 911 calls reporting the active shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Whiting was critically wounded and was transported by paramedics to HCMC, where she was later pronounced dead. At least four other individuals, including a 16-year-old girl, sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious and are currently receiving treatment.
Authorities have not released a motive but confirmed that the shooting was not random. “There was clearly some type of dispute or confrontation that escalated into gun violence,” said Parten. “We’re pursuing all leads and reviewing video footage captured by bystanders and nearby surveillance cameras.”
No arrests have been made as of Tuesday morning, and the investigation remains active. Minneapolis Police are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying those responsible. Anyone with video footage, photos, or information related to the shooting is urged to contact CrimeStoppers or submit tips anonymously.
A Life Cut Short
Friends and family members are mourning the devastating loss of Stageina Whiting, a woman described by loved ones as “bright, compassionate, and full of promise.” She worked as a caregiver for children with special needs and had recently been accepted into a nursing assistant program. “She wanted to help people. That’s all she ever talked about,” said her sister, Dezarae Whiting, through tears. “She was selfless, brave, and had a heart of gold.”
Stageina was the youngest of four siblings and had celebrated her 23rd birthday just a month earlier. Her mother, Angela Whiting, said her daughter had a magnetic personality and a gift for lifting others up during difficult times. “She wasn’t just my daughter—she was my best friend.”
The family is now raising funds to cover funeral expenses and memorial services. A vigil is being planned for later this week at Boom Island Park to honor her life and call for peace in the community.
