Only 20 years old, Chase was a midfielder for the DePaul men’s soccer team and had already made a strong impression both on and off the field. “Chase was known for his warmth, strength of character, and vibrant presence – qualities that touched the lives of many,” President Manuel wrote.

“His loss is deeply felt by his teammates, coaches, classmates, faculty, staff, and all who knew him.” Chase, a native of Atlanta, Georgia, had just completed his sophomore season, in which he played in 16 of DePaul’s 17 matches.

His talent, dedication, and sportsmanship were evident to all who watched him play. Teammates and coaches describe him not only as a gifted athlete but as someone whose positive energy and kindness had a lasting impact on everyone he encountered.

In a joint statement, DePaul Vice President and Director of Athletics DeWayne Peevy and Men’s Soccer Head Coach Mark Plotkin expressed the deep sorrow felt across the Athletics department. “We are heartbroken by the unexpected loss of Chase Stegall, a cherished member of our community, dedicated teammate and kind-hearted friend,” they said.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Chase’s family, friends, teammates, and all who loved him. In the coming days, we will support Chase’s family and teammates through this devastating time.”

Chase’s presence was more than just athletic excellence; he was known for his humility, supportive nature, and commitment to those around him. Friends recall him as someone who made time for others, always offering a listening ear or a word of encouragement. He brought people together with his sense of humor, loyalty, and generous spirit.

For many within the DePaul community, Chase’s death is not just the loss of a student-athlete, but the loss of a friend, a classmate, and a young man with immense promise. The grief is especially heavy among his teammates, who trained, traveled, and competed alongside him throughout the season.

University officials have announced that plans for a memorial service to honor Chase’s life are underway and will be shared with the community in the coming days. In the meantime, DePaul has made grief counseling and emotional support services available for students and staff as they process the devastating news.

As tributes pour in from across campus and beyond, it’s clear that Chase Stegall will be remembered not only for his contributions on the soccer field but for the light he brought into the lives of those around him. His legacy of kindness, character, and commitment to his team and his community will endure.

In the words of one of his teammates: “Chase wasn’t just a great player—he was a brother to all of us. He made us better, not just in soccer but as people. We’ll carry him with us every time we step onto the field.”

Chase Stegall’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed.
